Ideograph - Earth

The Ideograph EARTH (see character to the far left) was copied from the artistic work of Kazuaki Tanahashi, from his book  “Heart of the Brush – The Splendor of East Asian Calligraphy”, Shambhala, Boulder, 2016, p 99

The series Ideographiti is a contemporary artistic interpretation of East Asian calligraphy.

This form of calligraphy originated in China 3000 years ago and was later brought to Japan, Korea and Viet Nam. It is a system of writing comprising various styles, one of which involves the use of “ideographs” – each a symbol representing a word or idea, in contrast to phonetics where characters or letters represent sounds.  East Asian calligraphy has evolved over the centuries into modern times, representing the confluence of writing with art, religion, philosophy and East Asian culture.

The pieces in the series (see above) - derived from ideographs of the words earth, wondrous, ancient, and child -  were inspired by an old Native American proverb:

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
