Temperature Induced Migration
The Art
The Science
What’s Alarming
For thousands of years, the vast majority of humans have resided in parts of the globe where the mean average temperature (MAT) range was 55° to 59° Farenheit. (Agricultural and livestock production has been similarly limited.) Assuming populations continue to gravitate to these conditions, and carbon emissions continue at current levels, rising global temperatues will result in mass human migration in the coming decades, without which “…[O]ne third of the global population is projected to experience a MAT [greater than 52°F] currently found in only 0.8% of Earth’s land surface…”
The above maps show suitability areas for current and projected temperature scenarios. The lowest map (from which the art is derived) shows the areas that, based on historical patterns, would no longer be desirable for human habitation.
