Currently air conditioners and electric fans account for about 20% of the total electricity used by buildings around the world. As the world continues to warm, and third world countries continue to develop, demands for cooling will dramatically increase, more than tripling by 2050 - equivalent to the amount of electricity used by all of India and China today. The growing use of air conditioners in homes and offices around the world will be one of the top drivers of global electricity demand over the next three decades, according to new analysis by the International Energy Agency that stresses the urgent need for policy action to improve cooling efficiency.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that investments in efficient air conditioners can significantly reduce future cooling energy demands. Setting higher efficiency standards for cooling is one of the easiest steps governments can take to reduce the need for new power plants, cut emissions and reduce costs at the same time."
